Dick gained his wings on Friday morning, June 21, 2024, in Brooklyn, Iowa after a short illness. He was 65 years of age. Mass of Christian Burial will be on Wednesday, June 26, at 10:00 a.m. at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, in Brooklyn. Visitation will be on Tuesday, June 25, from 4:00 – 7:00 p.m. at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Brooklyn.
Richard “Dick” Johnathan Plants was born on April 4, 1959, to James and Mary Ann (Collum) Plants. Growing up in Brooklyn, he graduated from BGM High School in 1977. Dick dedicated his career to J & M Roofing & Maintenance, where he worked tirelessly alongside his family and rose to the position of president. Through his work, he touched the lives of many people and businesses across Iowa with his generosity and skill.
On October 24, 1981, Dick married Sharon (Heck) Plants, and together they built a home filled with love in Brooklyn. Dick’s legacy of hard work, dedication, and love for his family and friends will be remembered and cherished by all who knew him.
Dick’s life was richly blessed with a loving family, including his children, Jill Marie Doyle (Tim) and Jonathan Richard Plants (Shauna). He adored his four grandchildren, Henry and Hazel Lindley, Gracie and Lanie Plants, who brought immense joy and pride to his life.
He is survived by his wife, two children, grandchildren, and his six siblings: Steve (Pauline), Bill, Dennis (Teri), Ronnie (Janet), Kathy (Hamid) Feiz, and Brenda (Scott) Strong. Dick’s warmth, kindness, and unwavering dedication to his family and community will be forever missed.
He also leaves a legacy of love and fond memories with his numerous nieces, nephews, aunts, and uncles. He was known by many names such as Tricky Dick, Trickster, and UD. He always had a power mint to offer or teaching the art of eating a double stuffed Oreo. His sense of humor, warm smile, and passion for traveling will forever live on in our hearts.
His absence will be deeply felt by all who had the privilege of knowing him. Dick was preceded in death by his beloved parents, James and Mary Ann Plants.
A memorial fund has been established in Dick Plants’ name and can be sent to the family.
