Richard Charles Metz, 82, of Marion, passed away peacefully Thursday, Feb. 23, 2023, at Oldorf Hospice House Mercy, from Lewy Body Dementia. Celebration of Life: 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday, March 18, at American Legion, 625 31st St., Marion. Burial: a later date at St. Joseph’s Catholic Cemetery, Cedar Rapids, with military honors. Richard’s family.

Richard is survived by his wife of 64 years, Janet; two children, Julie Krejca of Marion and Ross (Marie) of Cedar Rapids; four grandchildren, Heather (Jess) Osborn, Cody Metz, Emily Metz and Keegan Krejca; and two great-grandchildren, Madison Osborn and Braydon Osborn. Richard also leaves behind many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, and four brothers.

Richard, the son of Walter Lester and Ona Flo Reavis Metz, was born April 3, 1940, in Tama County, Iowa. At an early age, he moved with his family to Vinton, Iowa. He graduated from Vinton High School. Richard was united in marriage to Janet Steepleton on May 23, 1959. He served in the army as a radio operator and was stationed in Fort Gordon, Ga. He was honorably discharged in 1964. The couple made their home in Vinton, Waterloo and moved to Cedar Rapids in 1966, where they made their home for many years. Richard worked for Duffy Schamberger, FMC, Grand Auto and Ketelsen RV, where he retired in 2005. He loved spending time with his family, camping and going on vacation. Richard adored his grandchildren and loved attending their activities. He was a master of all trades and could repair anything. He also enjoyed bowling, golfing, classic country western music, watching NASCAR, and was the most loyal Hawkeyes fan ever!

Richard’s family would like to express their sincere gratitude to the Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy for all their love, care and support they gave to Richard during his stay.

Memorials in Richard Metz’s name may be directed toward the Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy in Hiawatha and/or Alzheimer’s research.
