Richard Charles “Dick” Hare, 83, passed away peacefully on Thursday, May 25, 2023y, at the Hiawatha Care Center.

A memorial visitation will be held on Friday, June 2, 2023, from 3 to 5 p.m. at the Phillips Funeral Home Chapel, 212 E. Sixth St., in Vinton. Memorial services will be held at 6 p.m. Friday, also at the funeral home, with Deacon Bill Hare, and Rev. Douglas Woltemath officiating.

Dick was born on Feb. 17, 1940, in Cedar Falls, Iowa, the son of Richard and Rosemary (Sherman) Hare. After attending schools in Atlantic and Des Moines, Dick graduated from Sacred Heart High School in Boone in 1958. Dick served his Country in the United States Navy aboard the USS Ranger. After his discharge, he married Judy Overbeck, and the couple later divorced. On Sept. 5, 1981, he was united in marriage to Ruth Johnson Leberman in Lake Mills, Iowa.

Dick pursued a career in banking, receiving certification from the Colorado School of Banking. Dick worked in banks in Iowa and Minnesota, finally serving as president and chairman of the board at the Atkins Savings Bank and Trust in Atkins, Iowa.

Dick was very active in the Atkins community. He was a member of St. Stephen’s Lutheran Church, a member of the Atkins Improvement Mission, involved in raising funds for the new Atkins City Hall and library, active in Atkins Watermelon Days, including driving in the parade. He was also a member of the Iowa Bankers Association peer group. Dick received an award as a 50 year banker. Dick loved a good story and is remembered by his nieces and nephews for his hearty laugh. As much as Dick and Ruth enjoyed their life in Atkins, they also loved boating and fishing in Canada.

Dick is survived by his wife Ruth of Atkins; son Joe Hare of Aurora, Colo.; daughter Katie (Brett) Jackson of Urbandale, Iowa; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; brothers Bill Hare and John Hare; sisters Mary Swarm and Barbara Grimmer; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and his daughter-in-law Kimberly (Willis) Hare.
