Richard Andrew “Rick” Gaffney, 71, of Ryan, Iowa, passed away on Thursday, Sept. 8, 2022, at the Regional Medical Center in Manchester. He was born on Oct. 12, 1950, in Independence, the son of Andrew and Phyllis (Breitbach) Gaffney. Rick was raised and educated near Winthrop and was a 1969 graduate of East Buchanan High School. He then studied diesel mechanics at Hawkeye Technical Institute in Waterloo.

On Nov. 18, 1983, Rick was united in marriage to Lorraine Kehrli at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Ryan. Six children were born to this union. Rick was a farmer and also a truck driver. He enjoyed playing cards. Rick loved his family and enjoyed spending time with them.

Survivors include his wife of 38 years, Lorraine Gaffney of Ryan; his five children, Michelle Gaffney of Cedar Rapids, Bob (Katie) Gaffney of Marion, Tom Gaffney of Mason City, Maria Gaffney of Cedar Rapids and Joe Gaffney of Manchester; two grandchildren, Peter and Andrew Gaffney; eight siblings, Jerome (Evelyn) Gaffney of Gainesville, Fla., Ann Appell of Galva, Ill., Colleen (Frank Benn) Gaffney of Boulder, Colo., Mark (Mary Lou) Gaffney of Winthrop, Leo (Lori) Gaffney of Ryan, Susan (Michael) Callison of Urbandale, John (Lori) Gaffney of Tecumseh, Kan., and Trish (Rupert) Solis of Lemont, Ill.; a sister-in-law, Kathy Gaffney of West Des Moines; and many nieces and nephews.

Rick was preceded in death by his parents, Andrew and Phyllis Gaffney; parents-in-law, Marcus and Anne Kehrli; daughter, Monica Gaffney; grandson, Phillip Gaffney; brother, Paul Gaffney; and brother-in-law, Bart Mere.

Mass of Christian Burial: 10:30 a.m. Monday, Sept. 12, at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Ryan, Iowa, with the Rev. Andrew Gaffney officiating.

Visitation: 3 to 7 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 11, at Leonard-Muller Funeral Home in Manchester. Friends may also call from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at the church on Monday.

Inurnment: Calvary Cemetery, Ryan, Iowa.
