Richard A York, 79, of Cedar Rapids, passed away Tuesday, August 6, 2024, at Oldorf Hospice House in Hiawatha surrounded by his loving family. Visitation will be Sunday, August 11, 2024, 1:00 – 4:00 PM, at Cedar Memorial Funeral Home.
A private graveside service will be held in Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery
Richard was born May 5, 1945, to James Carson York and Leora Lucille (Waller) York in Cedar Rapids, IA. Richard was a graduate of Cedar Rapids Jefferson High School. He enlisted in the U.S. Army and served his country receiving an honorable discharge. On May 4, 1969, Richard married Margaret “Maggie” Rose Toborg in Muscatine, IA at the First Presbyterian Church. Richard and Maggie had two children, R. Brandon and Summer. He worked for the City of Cedar Rapids in the Water Department, where he retired in 2002. In 2014 Richard began working for Rochester Armored Car until 2022. He was also a Licensed Private Investigator. Richard enjoyed reading, crossword puzzles, watching Westerns, coffee with friends and spending time with his grandchildren.
Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Maggie, son, Brandon (Julie) York, daughter, Summer (James) Lang, sister Virginia Lindeman, and grandchildren Devin, Peyton, Kirsten, Jaden, and Jett.
Richard was preceded in death by his parents James and Leora York, brothers James C York and Carson L York.
The family would like to give a special thank-you to Hospice of Mercy, Wendy, Laura, Rita, Leah, Brian, Heather, Linda, and Pastor Joe for their compassionate care and guidance.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be directed to the Loaves and Fishes Food Pantry in c/o Westminster Presbyterian Church, or Hospice of Mercy.
