Raymond G. Metzger

Raymond G. Metzger, 89, of Wainwright, passed away in The Inn at Northwood Village at Dover on Friday, September 2, 2022.

Born in New Philadelphia on November 17, 1932, he was the son of the late Edward T. and Elsie (Jentes) Metzger.

After graduating from New Philadelphia High School in 1950, Raymond started his professional career with the former Joy Manufacturing in 1952, where he met his future wife, Thelma. He was a loyal employee for 40 years until his retirement in 1992.

Raymond spent his entire lifetime on his family’s 200-year-old farm. For more than 80 years, he tended to the land, cows, and cats. He was the hardest working man many have ever known. Together, he and Thelma created a simple, but beautiful life together on the farm, with their family, and at their church, Sharon Moravian Church.

Raymond is survived by his children, Rhonda (Michael) Reed of New Philadelphia and Roger (Amy) Metzger of Dover; his grandchildren, Kayla Metzger and Calvin, Nolan, and Clara Reed; his sisters and brother-in-law, Grace Swaldo of New Philadelphia, Fred Swaldo of Uhrichsville, and Marilyn Swaldo of Dover; and the special cats who adopted him, “Tommy cat and the girl”.

In addition to his parents, Raymond was preceded in passing by his wife, Thelma, on August 21, 2018; and his brother, Elden Metzger in a farming accident in 1966.

The Rev. Lloyd Gooden will officiate a funeral service for Raymond on Tuesday, September 6 at 11 a.m. with visitation one hour prior to the service in the Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home & Crematory at New Philadelphia. Burial will immediately follow the service in Evergreen Burial Park at New Philadelphia.

Memorial contributions in Raymond’s memory may be directed to Sharon Moravian Church, PO Box 385, Tuscarawas, OH 44682.
