Randall “Randy” Olson

Marion

Randall “Randy” Olson passed away in Venice, FL, Thursday, April 25, 2024 following a five-year battle with cancer and blood disease, with family by his side. He was born July 29, 1955 in Cedar Rapids, IA, to Jonas and Vera (Irvine) Olson. He was their fourth son, joining Ron, Mike and Jay.

Randy grew up in Marion and graduated from Marion Independent High School where he enjoyed a successful wrestling career. He worked in construction and retail, until he and his brother, Jay, started Olson Brothers Sodding and Landscaping, Inc. in 1977. In 1983, he met the love of his life, his wife of 38 years, Amy (Fishel). The two of them raised two amazing children, Andy and Rachel.

As an owner of Olson Brothers, Randy built a thriving business overseeing projects across Iowa including DOT, commercial and public works, and serving as a resource and pioneer in erosion control and native grass seeding. He was a member of the International Erosion Control Association (IECA), Chairman and Vice-Chair of the Associated General Contractors (AGC) specialty division, and served on the AGC Board of Directors.

Randy was known among his customers and contractors as having a can-do attitude, looking out for the best interests of all parties, mentoring and helping others in the field to build their careers, and making sure those around him were having fun and laughing. Many of his customers and other contractors became like family.

Randy had a zest for life, a keen sense of humor, and a generous spirit. He found joy in spending time with friends and family. He loved to travel, bringing extended family on vacations across Mexico and the Tropics. He was passionate about cooking and one of his happiest places was behind the grill preparing food for loved ones at the many events he hosted from the annual 4th of July party to birthdays and graduations to family reunions. Everyone knew they could rely on good food, fun, and a feeling of home at Randy and Amy’s.

Above all else, Randy looked out for his family and friends. He was a devoted husband, father, son, uncle, cousin, boss and friend. He was a proud and humble man who lived his life with generosity and compassion. He touched countless lives extending a helping hand to those in need.

Randy was a strong man who never once complained, even at the darkest times during his health journey. He was a jokester, and truly found joy in the joy of others. He was generous, loyal and loved fiercely.
