Mickey “Mick” A. Maxwell

Mickey “Mick” A. Maxwell, 65, of Springfield, passed away on Saturday, March 25, 2023 at Springfield Memorial Hospital.  He was born on November 13, 1957 in Springfield, IL the son of Phillip Lacy and Betty June (Kinkead) Maxwell.  He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Jennifer; and one brother Phil Maxwell.

 Mick is survived by his loving wife, Mary Kay Lentz; son, Greg Maxwell of Springfield;  brother,  Bob (late wife Jan) Maxwell of Rochester, IL; sisters, Sharon (husband Jim) Stickel and Marilyn Kuykendall of Springfield; brother, Tom (wife Jannie) Maxwell of N. Little Rock, AR; brother, Jimmy Maxwell of Springfield; sister-in-law, Donna (late husband Phil) Maxwell of Springfield; brothers-in-law, Stan (wife Tracy) Lentz of Lake Zurich, IL and Kevin (wife Cindy) Lentz of Glenview, IL; sister-in-law, Luann (late husband J.) Griffin of Glenarm, IL; many nieces and nephews, and great-nieces and nephews.

Mick was a graduate of Southeast High School, Springfield College, and Illinois State University where he earned a Master’s of Science in Special Education.  He pursued his teaching career at Springfield Public Schools, District 186 until retiring in 2017 and continued to teach through November 2022.

While teaching at Grant Middle School, he became better known as “Coach Maxwell” coaching boys track and field and basketball.  He led the Grant Generals 7th grade boys track and field and basketball teams to become the 7AA State Champions for both events in 1993, with a basketball record of (22-2).  The Illinois Basketball Coaches Association awarded Mick as I.E.S.A. Coach of the Year in 1995 after his Grant Generals 8th grade basketball team won the 8AA State Championship in 1994 (22-1) and his 7th grade basketball team won the 7AA State Championship in 1995 (26-1).

Mick went on to teach at Springfield High School where he worked the after-school program and ACT & SAT testing.  You could always find him at the score table for basketball, football, and volleyball games, including the City Tournament.

Many of his summers were spent at Hope School.   He taught plyometrics and basketball fundamentals at “The Gym” and in his spare time, enjoyed working in his yard.  The annual family vacations at Lake of the Ozarks gave Mick a chance to show off his fishing skills.  He will be deeply missed by all of his family and friends, and his beloved dog, Cole.
