Melvin D. Geiger, DVM
Melvin D. Geiger, DVM, 87 of Springfield, passed at 6:55 am, Thursday, March 9, 2023. He was born February 24, 1936, in Congerville, IL, to Edward and Frances Witzig Geiger. He married Marjorie Rothrock on August 14, 1960, and she survives.
Also surviving are two daughters, Christa (Steve) Babb of Lawrence, KS and Debra (Joey Carrasquillo) Geiger of Denver, CO; one son, Dr. Douglas (Blue) Geiger of Bloomington, IN; six grandchildren, Octavia Geiger, Claire (Eddie) Fundingsland, Reid Geiger, Tom Babb, Adam Babb and Grace Geiger; one brother, Garrel Geiger DVM of Sierra Vista, AZ; two nephews, Dr. Jason Geiger and Dr. Tracy Geiger and their mother, Julie Geiger all of WI.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Gary Geiger and one sister, Judith Geiger.
Mel was a 1960 graduate of the University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine. He was a US Air Force Veteran serving from 1960-1967 as a veterinarian. He practiced veterinary medicine an additional 33 years with Capitol Illini Veterinary Services and later worked with the Animal Protective League.
He was an active member of Western Oaks Baptist Church.
Although veterinary medicine was his passion, Mel enjoyed bowling, fishing, gardening, family vacations, baking cookies and chocolate.
A memorial service will be held at a later date to be announced.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Baptist Children’s Home and Family Services or the Central Illinois Food Bank.
