Melvin & Bonnie Sund
Cedar Rapids
Melvin James Sund, 81, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa died on March 10, 2023, and his lovely spouse of 50 years, Bonnie Lea Sund, 79, preceded him on January 26, 2023.
A visitation will be held from 11:00 to 1:00 PM on Monday, March 20, 2023, at the Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home.
A joint graveside service will be at 1:30 PM on Monday, March 20, 2023, at the Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery with military honors.
Melvin was born May 15, 1941, outside of Jamestown, North Dakota, the son of James and Maggie Sund. Melvin was a devoted father, husband, brother, uncle, great-grandfather, friend, and neighbor. He was completely selfless and would do anything for anyone. Once in the late seventies, halfway enroute in the 100-mile trip to Bonaparte, Iowa, he stopped on the side of the highway to render help to a stranded woman in the bitter cold whose car was broken down. He assisted the older woman including sandwiching Bonnie in the back seat of our car between her 3 boys and turning around to drive the woman home, 30 miles back to Iowa City to safety. The 3 boys would learn a lot that day and it tells you everything you need to know about Mel’s character and the impact he had on others.
Survivors include his children, Terry (Diana) Sund of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; Gene (Kim) Sund of Arlington, Tennessee; and Troy (Tracy) of Prior Lake, Minnesota; grandchildren; Jarin, Lara (Anthony), Michael (Lorena), Lauren, Austin, Calvin, and Colton; great-grandchildren, Kole, Landon, Maya, Bennett, Arilyn, Evangeline and Bella Jade. Mel was preceded in death by his grandson, Shaun as well as his very special, lifelong friends, Hal and Sharon Arntzen.
He will forever be missed. May he suffer no more and rest in peace with Bonnie, the love of his life.
