Melecia L. Casabal, 83, beloved sister, aunt and grandaunt, passed away on May 26, 2022. She was born in the Philippines on September 25, 1928.
She survived by her brothers; Victor (Gloria), Apolonio (Flordeliza), Feliciano (Corazon), Arturo (Alicia) and William (Glorina), and sister Evangelina, nieces; Maribeth, Emerald (Sean), Janice (Curtis) and Colleen (Nuraldin), nephews; Ronald (Regina), Dennis, Jonathan (Elizabeth), Raymond (Chan), Brian, Reginald (Carolina), Christopher (Viki) and Darryl, grandnieces; Gabriela, Coralin, Carissa, Raena and Fatimah Maria, grandnephews; Ethan, Mateo, Noah, and Wilson.
Having a teaching degree from the National Teachers College in Manila, she started her teaching career in the Philippines, before immigrating to the United States in 1968 and settling in Iowa.
Melecia began teaching in 1968, in Calamus, Iowa, School District. She moved to Maquoketa, Iowa in 1969 where she taught at the Youth Center for four years. She taught at Cardinal Elementary School for nine years before transferring to Briggs Elementary School. She retired in 1993 after serving the Maquoketa School System for 24 years.
Melecia earned her Master of Arts degree from Clarke College, Dubuque, Iowa in August 1979. The same year the State of Iowa Board of Public Instructions issued her Permanent Professional Certificate. The certificate entitled her to teach throughout her life, in any public or private school in Iowa.
Melecia received awards and recognition during her teaching career with the Maquoketa Community Schools, including an award of merit from Iowa Association of School Boards (IASB) in recognition of 24 years loyal service to the Maquoketa School District.

Visitation and services will be held at the Smith-Corcoran Funeral Homes, 6150 N Cicero Ave., Chicago, IL 60646, from 3PM to 7PM on June 2, 2022.
A memorial celebration of her life will take place at a later date to be held at the First Baptist Church, 804 W Platt St., Maquoketa, IA 52060
