- December 21, 2023
Mattie’s life, which began on March 28, 1942, in West Blocton, Alabama, was a tapestry woven with hard work, faith, and love. Born to Otis and Ida Mae, she moved to Cleveland, Ohio, at 14 years old under the caring wing of her uncle, the late Steve Dawson.
Throughout her life, Mattie held various jobs, each contributing to her growth and experiences. Her dedicated commitment led her to a 39-year career at Great Lakes Textiles Inc., where she eventually retired. It was during her time at GLT that she met Barbara Mathews, a fellow Jehovah’s Witness, who introduced her to the teachings that brought her spiritual fulfillment. Mattie embraced the teachings and was baptized as one of Jehovah’s Witnesses on June 8, 1975. Her faithfulness was evident through her years of service, dedicating time to auxiliary pioneering and later working diligently with full-time pioneers after retirement.
Known for her impeccable sense of style, Mattie had an innate knack for fashion and a charming sense of humor. Her pleasant and warm demeanor made her a joy to be around, leaving a positive impact on those fortunate enough to know her.
She leaves behind a legacy of love in her children: Simeon, Kelly, Michelle, and the late Katrina. Additionally, her grandchildren, including Micheal Simone, Marvelyn, Felisha, Keynan, Micheal Jr., Maishe, Stephen, and Kordae, as well as great-grandchildren Marianna, Christopher, Miracle, and Alexander, were blessed by her presence and love.
Mattie was cherished by a vast spiritual family, encompassing numerous brothers and sisters in faith, reflecting her dedication and devotion to her beliefs.
As we honor Mattie’s life, let us celebrate her unwavering faith, her remarkable style, and the joy she brought to others. She will be dearly missed but remembered fondly by the many lives she touched.
