Mary Holmes Pope Grimes
Mary Holmes Pope Grimes, 91, of Scotland Neck, passed away on Friday, September 16, 2022 at ECU Health Edgecombe Hospital in Tarboro.
Mary Holmes was born on April 14, 1931 to Bruce and Zora Bryan Pope in Scotland Neck. After graduating high school, she attended nursing school in Rocky Mount. She married the late John Winfred Grimes and they had four children. Mary Holmes worked as a bookkeeper for Josey Brothers for many years, she played the organ for several churches including Dawson Missionary Baptist Church and Trinity Episcopal Church. As a member of Trinity Episcopal Church, she served as the Director of the Altar Guild. Mary Holmes loved to sit on the beach, read books and sit out in her backyard and listen to the birds sing.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and her brother, Bruce Harris Pope, Jr..
Mary Holmes is survived by three sons, John Timothy Grimes and his wife Georgia of Alliance, NE, William “Billy” Bruce Grimes and his wife Rebecca of Tarboro, Jesse Lee Grimes and his wife Ruth Ann of Garner; a daughter, Mary Gail Grimes Wade and her husband JP of Scotland Neck; five grandchildren and their spouses, Cynthia, Samantha (Chris), John (Sara), Mary Elizabeth, and Helen (Adam); and 8 great grandchildren.
A Celebration of Life Graveside Service will be held on Thursday, September 22, 2022, at 2:00PM at the Trinity Episcopal Cemetery in Scotland Neck with The Reverend Brian Benton officiating. There will be a time to visit with the family at a reception at the Trinity Episcopal Church Parrish House following the service.
