Mary Ann Agnes Schutt

Mary Ann Agnes Schutt, 83, passed away peacefully at her daughters’ home in the Blue Ridge mountains of North Carolina on Thursday, July 29, 2021. She was surrounded by her loving husband of 60 years and children while listening to her favorite song, Ave Maria.

Mary Ann was born on March 20, 1938, in St. Clairsville, OH to the late William and Anna Klan. She grew up in Maynard, OH and graduated from St. Clairsville High School. She received her Bachelor of Science degree from the College of Saint Mary, Columbus, OH and her Master of Theology at Southern Methodist University. Working as a chaplain at St. Joseph Hospital in Ft. Worth, TX brought Mary Ann much fulfillment.

After college, Mary Ann married Don Frederick Schutt and together they raised three children. Throughout her lifetime various volunteer avenues enriched, not only her life, but also those to whom she ministered. Years spent in Mauston, WI were filled with children’s activities and involvement with life at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church and School, serving as a school board member, caring for relocated refugees and volunteering for various committees and festivals. Deeply committed to her family and extended family at St. Francis Catholic Church in Grapevine, TX, she could often be found with the hospitality committee, St. Francis Outreach, Knights of Columbus Ladies Auxiliary, and the VFW Auxiliary.

Her life centered around sharing fellowship around delicious meals. Mary Ann enjoyed gardening, food preservation and all things nature. She is remembered for fresh baked goods such as bread, cinnamon rolls, cookies, and pies, homemade preserves, dinner parties and serving at ministry-related functions. Countless rounds of Dominos, Gin Rummy and Yahtzee have forever gone down in the books. Through her hobbies and ministries, interactions with people were central; she listened without judgement and cared for others, lovingly letting them know they mattered.

Mary Ann is survived by her devoted husband, Don Frederick Schutt; daughter Carolyn (Charlie) Hoidal, grandchildren Kyle (Mallory), Natalie, John Thomas (Jenna), Chad (Sidney); daughter Diane (Scott) Beidler, grandchildren Matthew (Caitlin) – great grandchildren Calvin, Remy, Brian (Katilyn), Brooke (Henry), Amy; son Alan (Anne) Schutt grandchildren Jordan, Taylor (Andrea) – great grandchildren Sydney, Cloe, Kamryn, Parker and Jamie.
