Martin Christopher O’Malley

Martin Christopher O’Malley, age 89, passed away peacefully at home with his family by his side on December 22, 2020. He is now reunited with his wife of 60 years, Joan, who preceded him in death by just three months.

Martin was the third of four children born to Katherine (Loftus) and Michael O’Malley, both Irish Immigrants who met in Chicago at the turn of the last century. He was a graduate of Loyola Academy and paused his undergraduate studies at Loyola University of Chicago to volunteer for induction into the United States Air Force during the Korean War. After the war, the GI Bill allowed him to complete his undergraduate degree at Saint Mary’s University of Minnesota and his graduate degree at Saint Louis University. He then went on to a meaningful 33-year career in psychology. He was also a lifelong Democrat who campaigned for John F. Kennedy within the predominantly Republican community of Wilmette, where he and Joan resided for 45 years. There, they raised their three children Michael, Paul (Nancy) and Jeannie and hosted many family gatherings with their beloved grandchildren Lauren (Sasha), Jack, Grace, Drew, Anna, Peter, Amy and Martin. He was a devoted and loving husband, father and grandfather.

Never shy about talking politics with friends and family over dinner at the Vi Community in Glenview where he and Joan spent their last 10 years together, Martin was a true gentleman who proudly cast his last ballot for Joseph Biden and Kamala Harris in November. He was a longtime member of the Optimist Club of Glenview as well as a discussion leader of the Talking Books Club at the Vi for residents with limited vision.

Martin will be remembered for his love of family, patriotism, curiosity, intelligence and Irish wit. Memorial gifts may be made in Martin’s memory to the charity of your choice. He and Joan will be interred together at Sarasota National Cemetery in a private ceremony where Martin will receive Full Military Honors as a United States Veteran.
