Marilyn Jean Berglund
Marilyn Jean Berglund, 93, of Iowa City, Iowa, passed away peacefully at her home at Legacy Pointe Senior Living in Iowa City on Aug. 4, 2022.
Marilyn was born March 3, 1929, in Minneapolis, Minn., to Carl Johnson and Maud (Bowman) Johnson. She spent her younger days growing up in Minneapolis later attending MaCalester College in St. Paul, Minn., for art. She married Earl Marvin Berglund on May 7, 1949, in Minneapolis, Minn. They first lived in Boulder, Colo., before settling in Iowa City, Iowa, while starting their family. Marilyn led a very active life running the household while raising seven children. The family enjoyed camping together in the Boundary Waters and spending time at their cabin in Southern Canada.
Marilyn was a very talented woman. She was a gifted artist, quilter, seamstress and cook passing along those skills to many of her children and grandchildren. She enjoyed helping several with their 4H projects and teaching them to quilt. She was a proud Scandinavian woman who shared her heritage through her Rosemaling painting and cooking. Marilyn had a love for nature and it was reflected in many of her beautiful paintings. A favorite spot to visit was Kent Park in rural Johnson County.
Marilyn loved her family deeply and enjoyed spending time with them affectionately known as Mama Marilyn. She was an avid crossword puzzler, loved going to the opera and ballet and enjoying the occasional margarita.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Earl Berglund; her parents and siblings; as well as her beloved granddaughter, Heather.
She is survived by her seven children, David (Lynda) Berglund, Marie Berglund (Michael) Bass, Philip Berglund (Marilyn DeMay), Elizabeth Berglund Andreoli (Joseph Goellner), Erik Berglund, Carl Berglund and Kristan Berglund (David) Smith; 15 grandchildren, Tara Berglund Syring, Matthew Berglund, Justin Bass, Lauren Bass (Danny) Hauser, Emily Berglund (Matt) Bothell, Audrey Berglund (B.J.) McKasey, Anne Berglund Stork (Pete McCarthy), Jayne Berglund (Chad) Barker and Danial Berglund; and 10 great-grandchildren, Tyler Syring, Trevor Syring, Jaxon Berglund, Oliver Stork, Maddox McKasey, Lincoln McKasey, Jack Barker, Oliver Brown, Annabelle Brown and Cooper Greenway.
The family would like to thank the staffs of Legacy Pointe Senior Living, Dr. Maurice Champion and Mercy Hospital Iowa City for a lifetime of care, Iowa City Hospice and Gay and Ciha Funeral and Cremation Services for their kindness, compassion and support through this time.
