Maria Sintichakis Galanos

Maria Sintichakis Galanos, 75, August 4, 1945 – April 25, 2021. Mama or Yiaya as everyone knew her was born in Agios Nikolaos, Crete, Greece in 1945 to Ioannoy and Aristea Sintichakis. She was the youngest of their three children and preceded in death by her parents, Sister Adamantia Chrissoy and Brother Giorgos Sintichakis. She is survived by her children Andreanna Galanos, Demetrios Alimonos, Melinda Alimonos and Minos Galanos. She was also grandmother to Eleftherios Saleh and Elias Alimonos. Maria was referred to by hundreds of people as “Mama” or “Yiaya” as she was beloved by all. Maria was an accomplished athlete in her youth in various track and field events in her native Greece including shotput, javelin and discus. Never one short of ambition, Maria came to the United States in 1967 seeking a better life and began a career in engineering and drafting design working for numerous companies from Manhattan to Virginia, and even being a Naval Design Contractor responsible for the electrical engineering on multiple Aircraft Carriers. Maria’s life was dedicated to her Greek Orthodox Faith as a member of Saints Constantine and Helen Greek Orthodox Church and Saint Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church. Above all, Maria gave all she had to her children and grandchildren as they were her life. She will be forever missed but will always be in the hearts of all those she touched along her journey through life. 

Services will be held on Monday, May 3rd at Saint Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church at 4900 Mooretown Road, Williamsburg, VA with the viewing beginning at 12 noon with the service beginning at 2pm. Burial will be at 3pm at Williamsburg Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the church in Maria’s honor.
