Lt. Colonel Lawrence “Larry” D. Houser, 74 of Buffalo Hart, IL died at 9:05 pm, Monday, May 17, 2021, at Memorial Medical Center. He was born November 17, 1946, in Iowa City, IA to Walter Edward and Helen Elizabeth Shimon Houser. He married Christa Hannah Koch on July 8, 1967, married for 54 years and she survives.
Also surviving are three sons, Rodney (Karen) Houser of Colorado Springs, CO, Douglas (Chassidy) Houser of Pleasant Plains, IL and Brian (Lindsey) Houser of Buffalo Hart, IL; five grandchildren, MacKenzie, Audrey, Evan, Remington and Olivia; one sister, Bonnie (LaVerne) Forbes of Iowa City, IA; two brothers, Woodrow “Woody” Houser of Iowa City, IA and Anton “Tony” (Gina) Houser of Montrose, IA; sister-in-law, Hilda Kassal, and several nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, William “Bill” Houser; one niece, Brenda Houser and several aunts and uncles.
Larry is a graduate of City High School in Iowa City and received his Bachelor’s Degree at University of Iowa.
Larry was a US Air Force veteran, where he served as Navigator and Liaison for the 183rd Fighter Wing and 170th fighter squadron for 28 years. He flew C130’s and F4 Phantoms.
He was engaged in farming his whole life and worked as a Civil Engineer and Bureau Chief for IDOT for 35 years.
Larry enjoyed fishing, hunting, and working on old cars and tractors. He loved his best buddy “Seppel” and watching his grandchildren play sports.
He won 3rd in State in high school Wrestling and enjoyed playing football in high school.
Visitation: 4 – 7 pm, Tuesday, June 1, 2021 at Staab Funeral Home – Sherman, IL with a prayer service being held at 4 pm.
A private funeral mass will be held at St. James Church in Riverton, IL with Reverend Raphael Paul DeMoreno officiating. Burial will be at Camp Butler National Cemetery where military honors will be accorded by the Sangamon County Inter Veteran’s Burial Detail and the US Air Force.
Memorial contributions may be made to Animal Protective League, University of Iowa Engineering Association, Tri-City FFA, or Young Heroes.
