Lowell Dean Schroeder
Cedar Rapids
Lowell Dean Schroeder, 90, of Cedar Rapids, passed away Thursday, Oct. 13, 2022, at St. Luke’s Hospital. A visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 18, at Trinity Lutheran Church, Cedar Rapids. A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 19, at Trinity Lutheran Church. Burial will follow at Mt. Calvary Cemetery. Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
Lowell was born on Sept. 14, 1932, in his grandfather’s house to parents Edwin and Anne (Rossmiller) Schroeder. Following his graduation from Davenport (Neb.) High School, he enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps during the Korean conflict. Stationed in the United States, he achieved the rank of sergeant and was awarded the Expert Rifleman badge. After the untimely passing of his father in 1956, he was honorably discharged from the Marines and returned to the family farm. He later enrolled in the University of Nebraska at Lincoln, where he became the first of his family to graduate.
After graduating from college in 1961, Lowell started as an investments analyst for Aid Association for Lutherans in Appleton, Wis. While living in Appleton, Lowell met his wife Judith “Judy” Stellwagen. They were married in Milwaukee, Wis. on Dec. 18, 1965. All four of their children were born in Appleton, where he drove them to school every day. In 1980, Lowell and his family moved to Cedar Rapids, where he worked as a trust manager for several local financial institutions and retired from Wells Fargo, at age 70.
Lowell loves the Lord and will continue to walk with Him into eternity. He was active in the Trinity church choir and the Board of Evangelism for many years and led Bible classes. He lived his life with humility, generosity and integrity, following the example that God gave us in Jesus.
Lowell loved his family, and was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. He enjoyed attending his children’s school activities and having fun with his grandchildren. There are many stories about the vacations and road trips that the family took together, mostly in a small car without air-conditioning.
Lowell loved sports, especially his children’s sporting events and Nebraska Cornhusker football. Many of his family’s fond memories are from attending or watching the Green Bay Packers, Milwaukee Brewers or St. Louis Cardinals games together. Lowell, Judy and their family attended Brewers spring training games in Arizona for the past several years, enjoying soaking up the sun and predicting who would make the team.
Lowell’s hobbies included playing tennis, reading Civil War history, singing and listening to music (usually church choirs and brass bands). His family especially enjoyed it when he sang “The Battle Hymn of the Republic.”
Lowell is survived by his wife of 56 years, Judith Schroeder of Cedar Rapids; children, Christopher (Amy) Schroeder of St. Charles, Mo., Heidi Schroeder of Cedar Rapids, the Rev. Jonathan (Alisa) Schroeder of Geneva, Ohio, and Andrew Schroeder of Cedar Rapids; and grandchildren, Hanna, Isaiah and Emmanuelle; and Alex and Owen; brothers, Russell (Lila) Schroeder and James (Gail) Schroeder; sister, Patricia Taylor; and sisters-in-law, Dr. Carol Stellwagen and Emalee Stellwagen.
Lowell was preceded in death by his parents; brother-in-law, Dr. Joel Stellwagen; and sisters-in-law, Carol (Wiegandt) Schroeder and Lila (Mussmann) Schroeder.
In lieu of flowers, his family would wish gifts to be left in tribute to Lowell’s memory with Wounded Warrior Project and Lutheran Hour Ministries.
