Loretta Jane Costello, 89, passed away peacefully on Monday, October 7, 2024, at the Anamosa Care Center.

Visitation will be at Goettsch Funeral Home in Anamosa on Wednesday, Oct. 16, 2024, 4 – 7 pm. Funeral services will be held at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Anamosa, with Father Sean Smith officiating, at 11:00 am, Thursday, Oct. 17, 2024, with a small meal and gathering immediately following in the church basement. A private burial will be in Riverside Cemetery.

Loretta was born on March 24, 1935, in Des Moines, Iowa to Ross and Pauline (Formento) Wright. She attended Lincoln High School in Des Moines. Through her exceptionally good friend Joyce Costello she met her future husband, Jack. Loretta and Jack were married on August 3, 1952. They moved to Anamosa in 1956 and had five children, John, Jim, Jena, Jan, and Joe.

Loretta was a stay-at-home mother until her youngest went to school. She then became an assistant librarian at Anamosa High School. Many of John, Jim, and Jena’s friends affectionately referred to her as “Mom.” She then worked at Nellie-Donn’s flower shop until they decided to retire. Her last job was as a central records clerk at the Anamosa Men’s Reformatory where she retired from.

Those of you who were fortunate enough to know Loretta, knew that she never had a bad word to say about anyone. You were always welcome in her house, and she treated her kids’ friends like they were her own. We used to kid that she should have had stock in Kodak and Hallmark. She always took tons of pictures and sent many cards!

Loretta is survived by her son, John (Susan) Costello, Marion, and daughter, Jan (Loren) Siebels, Anamosa, thirteen grandchildren and many nieces and nephews and great-grandchildren.

As she passes out of our world, she will join up again with her husband, Jack, her sons, Jim and Joe, her daughter Jena, and her sister Delores, who have gone before her. Loretta will be greatly missed by her family and friends.
