Lawrence “Gene” Eugene Whiting, 95, of Marion, Iowa, formerly of Delhi, Iowa, passed away on Sunday, November 6, 2022, at St. Luke’s Transitional Care in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. A Rosary will be held by the Knights of Columbus at 1:30 p.m. on Sunday, November 13, 2022, at Bohnenkamp-Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service in Manchester, Iowa, where a visitation will follow from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. A Funeral Mass will take place at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, November 14, 2022, at St. John’s Catholic Church in Delhi, Iowa, where an additional visitation will be held one hour prior to Mass. Cremation will follow services on Monday and inurnment will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, November 15, 2022, at St. John’s Catholic Cemetery in Delhi.

Gene was born on a small farm near Dyersville, Iowa, on January 20, 1927, to Lawrence F. and Gertrude (Cavanaugh) Whiting. After attending school in Dyersville, at age 17, he enlisted and served honorably for two years in the United States Army, during World War II. Upon discharge, he worked at the railroad. On January 20, 1953, Gene was united in marriage to Marie Miller at St. Francis Xavier Basilica in Dyersville. They moved to Delhi to raise their family. Gene was a lifelong member of St. John’s Catholic Church, where he loved being an usher. He also belonged to the American Legion and Knights of Columbus. In 1989, Gene retired after working 33 years for the Georgia Pacific Box Factory in Monticello, Iowa.

Gene enjoyed spending time with his family and friends, pitching horseshoes, playing cards, fishing, and hunting. He also enjoyed watching the Chicago Cubs, Iowa Hawkeyes, and decorating his yard for the holidays. Gene will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.

Gene is survived and lovingly remembered by his four children, Larry (Joyce) Whiting of Marion, Sharon Whiting of Marion, Donna Whiting of Marion, and Gary (Kim) Whiting of Center Point, Iowa; six grandchildren, Brent Whiting, Laurie (Jon) Osborn, Adam (Meghan) Whiting, Drew (Jenna) Whiting, Brianna (Shane) Proietto, and Jeanie (Joey) Chenoweth; seven great-grandchildren; four step-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Marie Whiting in 1993; and seven siblings, Frances Martin, Anita Ament, Dorothy Beyer, Marie March, Rose Werner, Frank Whiting, and Robert Whiting.

In lieu of flowers, memorials in Gene’s memory may be made to the family, in care of Donna and/or Sharon Whiting.
