Lawrence Dale Ahrens

Of Walworth, formerly of Sharon

Lawrence (“Larry” or “Buck”) Ahrens was born August 30, 1939 in Woodstock, Illinois to Fred and Florence (Schmid) Ahrens.  He passed away on Sunday, September 17, 2023 at Azura Memory Care in Beloit.

After graduating Huntley High School in 1957, he joined the US Army and served in locations such as Germany and Amsterdam before his discharge in 1961. He rejoined the family farm operation but after meeting Judith Smith on a blind date, they married on July 7, 1967 and moved to Harvard, at which point he began working at USG in Walworth as a heavy equipment operator. Larry and Judy ultimately settled in rural Sharon where they raised their children, Alison “Lisa” Ahrens of Elkhorn, Kristine Schumacher of Trevor, and David (Laura Snapp) Ahrens of Walworth. After he retired in 2003, he and Judy moved to Walworth in 2019.  He enjoyed running his hobby farm for many years and took great pride in his role as a grandpa to Ryan, Sean, and Sara Schumacher and Hannah, Emma, and Luke Ahrens – especially spending time with them outdoors and playing cards.

Larry is survived by his wife, children and grandchildren, as well as his sisters Janet (Jim) Hulke of Huntley and Carolyn (Jim) Jones of Union, and his brother LeRoy (Phyllis) Ahrens of Barrington; as well as many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and son-in-law Scott Schumacher.

A memorial visitation was held on Saturday, September 30, 2023 at Toynton’s Walworth Funeral Home.

The family wishes to thank his caregivers at Arbor Village in Lake Geneva and the Hospice Alliance of Walworth County.
