LaVerne R. Troester, age 88, of Garnavillo, passed away peacefully and surrounded by loved ones on Wednesday, September 4, after a brief cancer diagnosis. He was born on April 30, 1936, in Guttenberg, Iowa. The son of Harold and Zala (Brown) Troester, he was one of seven siblings (his twin brother, Leland passed away at birth). LaVerne attended Giard Country School and graduated from Monona High School in 1954. On September 20, 1960, LaVerne married Elaine Stroschein, and five children were born into this union: LeAllen, Carol, Leland, Larry, and Lance. In 1994, LaVerne was preceded in death by his wife Elaine, and he later found a loving companion, Dolly Klingeman of Monona, with whom he shared many happy years.

LaVerne loved baseball and excelled on the pitcher’s mound as a boy. He enjoyed deer and pheasant hunting, fishing, taking in sporting events, especially basketball games with his family, watching wrestling, playing cards, mowing yards, and traveling to see family and friends. LaVerne began working for Clayton County in 1971 and was a proud employee for 36 years. He especially enjoyed plowing snow and helping those in need during the winter months.

LaVerne will be remembered for his enduring faith in God and for being incredibly kindhearted, taking delight in helping others and never speaking harshly to or about anyone. He is survived by his loving partner, Dolly Klingeman of Monona, IA; sons Leland of McGregor, IA, Larry of Garnavillo, IA, Lance (Jamie) of College Station, TX; his brother Herbert (Theresa) of Vernal, UT; sisters Rita Willer of Cedar Rapids, IA and Sharlene (Stan) Milewsky of Riceville, IA; sister-in-law Karla of Prairie du Chien, WI; five grandchildren, one great-grandchild, and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Elaine; daughter, Carol and son, LeAllen; granddaughter, Alissa; twin brother, Leland; sister, Karen Standorf and her husband, Harlan; brother, Curtis; and brother-in-law, Larry Willer.

The family would like to thank all the family and friends who visited and sent well-wishes and prayers during LaVerne’s final days, and the numerous caregivers for caring for him so well.

Visitation will be held from 4:00 – 7:00 p.m. on Friday, September 20, 2024, at Morris Funeral Home in Garnavillo. Visitation will continue at church one hour prior to funeral services.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, September 21, 2024, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Garnavillo, Iowa with burial to follow at St. Joseph’s cemetery.
