Larry G. Gibbs
- December 23, 2022
Larry G. Gibbs, 83, of New Philadelphia, passed away peacefully on December 22, 2022, in the Community Hospice Truman House following a short period of declining health.
Born in the family home in Goshen on November 8, 1939, he was the son of the late William Alfred and Elsie Bernice (Walton) Gibbs.
After graduating from Midvale High School, Larry met and fell in love with the former Paula Kay Edwards. They were wed on August 30, 1959 in Rush Church of the Nazarene. They lived out their vows to love and to cherish in good times and in bad, in sickness and in health.
Larry and Kay’s faith was nurtured at the First Church of the Nazarene in New Philadelphia. On September 25, 1995, Larry was the 409th heart transplant recipient at the Cleveland Clinic. With his family and community by his side and upholding him in prayer, he was blessed with a successful transplant that gave him 27 additional years of life.
Professionally, Larry began his banking career as a teller at Tuscarawas Savings & Loan. He earned the trust and respect of the Tuscarawas Valley as he advanced throughout the industry as a successful bank executive and ultimately, retiring as a trust officer and investment broker with Huntington Bank in Dover. His career spanned more than 50 years including employment with Diamond Savings & Loan, Belmont National Bank, and Sky Bank, also.
In addition to his banking career, Larry supported his local community with leadership roles in the New Philadelphia Lions Club, Quaker Club, and was named Administrator of the Rosenberry Foundation and served in that capacity for numerous years.
Larry also honorably served his country for eight years in the United States Army Reserve.
Larry’s peace and restoration was found at his family’s, “Timber Ridge 40 Acres” tree farm. There, Larry enjoyed working the land alongside his family and friends. His family will retell cherished memories created on that land for years to come.
Larry will be forever loved and deeply missed by his family including his wife, Kay; sons, Douglas (Robin) Gibbs of New Philadelphia and Gregory (Jennifer) Gibbs of Lewis Center, Oh; grandchildren, Rachel (Chase) Steele of Cincinnati and Morgan, Ethan, Mackenzie and Liam Gibbs of Lewis Center; and his nephew, G. Randall (Nancy) Gibbs.
In addition to his parents, Larry was preceded in passing by his brothers, Gerald (Lola) Gibbs and Kenneth Gibbs.
Private services will be held and interment will take place in Evergreen Burial Park at New Philadelphia.
In gratitude for their exemplary care to Larry in his final days, the Gibbs family requests memorial contributions in Larry’s memory to be directed to Community Hospice, 716 Commercial Ave SW, New Philadelphia, OH 44663.
