Kris Gerard Schafer, 64, of Springfield passed away on Monday, February 21, 2022 in Ft. Myers, FL. He was born on June 20, 1957 in Springfield, IL to Vernon Louis and Mary Marguerite (Kienzler) Schafer. He married Diana J. Catlin on April 3, 1989.
He is survived by his wife, Diana J. Schafer; two sons, Matthew S. Catlin and Michael J. (Ashley) Schafer; four granchildren, Nathan S. Catlin, Matthew S. Catlin, Jr., Dillon M. Catlin and Kyrian J. Schafer; twelve brothers and sisters, Laurie (Steve) Mann, Kurt (Kathleen) Schafer, Kevin (Michelle) Schafer, Karen (Rich) Higdon, Dan Schafer, Mary Beth Ross, Jack Schafer, Jane Edwards, Sue (Kurt) Windisch, Sally Lyons, David Schafer and Steve Schafer; several aunts; one uncle and numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his daughter, Lindsay Renee Schafer, parents and one brother, Tom Schafer.
Kris retired from the Navy SeaBee’s after 21 years of service. He also had worked at St. John’s Hospital in maintenance and construction for 41 years. He was also a member of the Steam and Pipefitters Union and volunteered for the Children’s Miracle Network.
Visitation: 4 – 7 pm, Wednesday, March 2, 2022 at Staab Funeral Home – Springfield.
Funeral Mass: 11:30 am, Thursday, March 3, 2022 at Blessed Sacrament Church with Reverend Jeff Grant officiating.
Burial will follow at Camp Butler National Cemetery where military honors will be conducted.
