Kevon Dwight Rogers
Kevon Dwight Rogers, 87, of Granbury, and formerly of Texas City, Texas, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, passed away on Saturday, March 5, 2022, in Weatherford, Texas.
Kevon was born on October 11,1934 in Hamlin, Texas. He was the eldest of two sons born to Elmon and Virgie Rogers. He was a 1953 graduate of Hamlin High School where he played on the Hamlin High School Pied Pipers football team as an all district center. Kevon was a faithful alum and stayed in contact with his classmates. He enjoyed his high school reunions and in 2013 was elected “Coming Home” King. He wore the sash proudly as he was featured in a town parade and also was presented on the football field. Kevon served his country in the US Army stationed in Germany from 1954-1956. Upon his discharge from the army, Kevon attended North Texas State Teachers College where he met the love of his life, Avis Kay Sewell. He knew the minute he met Avis that she was the one for him and set out to win her heart. On August 30, 1957 Kevon married Avis in a double wedding ceremony in Texas City with Avis’s twin sister Amie Fay Sewell and her fiance Lairy Steve Chandler. Kevon and Avis had three children: Kevon Scott, Kimberly Kay, and Woodson Blain. Kevon was an independent owner and operator of Mobil and Texaco service stations. His friendly personality created loyalty from his customers. Later, he continued working for Mobil Oil Company as a pipefitter and welder. Kevon was most proud to have helped supervise the completion of the East/West Crude Oil Pipeline that stretched for 750 miles in Saudi Arabia from 1977 -1981. He retired from Mobil Pipeline in 1996.
Kevon was a member of the First Baptist Church in Texas City, Texas. He fondly remembered working on the 100 Year Anniversary celebration of First Baptist Church and participating in the Living Christmas Tree production each year. Through their church, Kevon and Avis actively supported the Red Cross after Hurricane Katrina’s devastation of New Orleans. Kevon was an avid follower of sports and loved watching his sons play baseball. He served as a Little League coach for his boys’ teams. In his free time, Kevon earned his pilot’s license and enjoyed flying from the Jefferson County Airport. Another of Kevon’s favorite pastimes was riding motorcycles, especially his Gold Wing. He and Avis joined a local Gold Wing Club and together they participated in bike parades during the Christmas holidays. Kevon was known for his sense of humor. If you knew Kevon, then you were told many “You Might be a Redneck if…” jokes! Making people laugh brought him delight. Most of all, Kevon was proud of his family and particularly of putting his three children through college. His love for Avis was immense, and he told her many times daily, “ I love you, too…t-double o.” When he spoke of his wife and family, it was with pride and love.
Kevon is survived by Avis, his beloved wife of over 64 years; his children, Kevon Scott Rogers and wife Renee, Kimberly Kay and husband Leonard McLaughlin, and Woodson Blain Rogers and wife Joy; his grandchildren, Kevon Charles Rogers and wife Hilary, Haydon Sewell Rogers and wife Dannon, Lauren Renee Rogers, Jacob Kane McLaughlin and wife Chelsea, Maddie Amelia McLaughlin, Blain Thomas Rogers and wife Patricia, and Jack Collin Rogers; great-grandchildren, Harrison Scott Rogers and Emory Rachel Rogers; and also by his special “spoiled” dog, Penny.
In addition to his parents, Kevon was preceded in death by his brother, Elmon Dwain Rogers.
The family wishes to express gratitude to Weatherford’s Hilltop Park Rehabilitation and Care Center and Valor Hospice for their loving care of Kevon and exceptional support of the family during Kevon’s final days of life.
A gathering and Celebration of Kevon’s Life will be held on Sunday, March 27, 2022 at 1:00 PM at Top Water Grill, Avenue O San Leon, TX.
