Kathleen R. Santmyer passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday, November 3, 2021, from a brief illness. Born October 4, 1927, in Fredericksburg, Ohio, she was one of five children of the late Custer and Mary (Brown) Cramer. She was a kind lady and never said a bad word about anyone. She was a true role model to follow. Kathleen was a loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother and always put others first before she tended to her own needs.
Kathleen was a 1946 graduate of Fredericksburg High School. She worked for the Fredericksburg Pottery and Cutter’s Drug Store. Kathleen graduated from Canton Beauty Academy in Canton, Ohio, in 1947, and afterward worked at Maxine’s Beauty Shop in Wooster, Ohio, until her marriage to Leroy Santmyer on August 11, 1949. They moved to Cambridge, Ohio, and then Marietta, Ohio, before settling in the Mansfield area in 1953. Kathleen was active as Den Mother with the Cub Scouts during her sons’ early scouting years. She was then employed with Betty’s Beauty Shop in Mansfield. Kathleen was a member of the Ontario United Methodist Church.
Kathleen is survived by two sons, Robert (Karen) Santmyer of Avon Lake, FL, and Steven (Lori) Santmyer of Ontario; daughter-in-law, Sally Bowen Santmyer of Mansfield; five grandchildren, Jeremiah Santmyer, Erik (Rachael) Santmyer, Jaimie (Ricardo) Santmyer Pesce, Aaron (Melissa) Santmyer, and Ashley (Andy) Santmyer Orewiler; and ten great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Leroy E. Santmyer; parents, Custer and Mary Cramer; two sons, Donald Santmyer and infant, Ronald Santmyer; two brothers, Harold “Mike” Cramer and Howard Cramer; and two sisters, Shirley Cramer Ice and Marlene Carlson.
The family will receive friends from 1:00-4:00 p.m. Sunday, November 7, 2021, at the Ontario Home of Wappner Funeral Directors, 100 S. Lexington-Springmill Road. The funeral service conducted by Pastor Christine Bell will be held in the funeral home on Monday at 10:00 a.m. She will be laid to rest beside her husband in Dalton Cemetery at 2:00 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to Ontario United Methodist Church.
