Joseph “Joe” Frank Finkstein, 82, of Marion, Iowa, passed away surrounded by his loving family on Thursday, April 25, 2024, at the Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy in Hiawatha, Iowa. The family will greet friends from 12:30 – 2:30 p.m. on Monday, May 6, 2024, at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service in Marion, where a Memorial Service will take place at 2:30 p.m. Rabbi Todd Thalblum and Reverend Doctor Steve Knudson will officiate. Burial will follow at Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery. Joe was born on February 9, 1942, in Brooklyn, New York, the son of Sam and Fanny (Rein) Finkstein. He was a 1960 graduate of Pulaski High School in Virginia and graduated from Virginia Polytech Institute with a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering in 1966. On September 27, 1986, Joe was united in marriage to Vicki Lynn Koranda at the Indian Creek Country Club in Marion. He worked for several months at the FCC. He worked at the U.S. Navy test center at the Patuxent River Naval Air Station. One highlight for Joe was flying around the world three times on a P3 aircraft running tests on new satellites.

During his college years in Virginia, he was a disc jockey for WPUV, as well as KLWW in Cedar Rapids, under the name “Joey Dee.” He began his career with Collins Radio company in Cedar Rapids in 1967 where he worked in engineering, marketing, project management, and ending his 33-year career in 2000, as a Business Area Director of Communication Systems in Air Transport Division. In retirement, he established and operated his own computer consulting business (CCS). His interests and hobbies included Ham Radio and he received his first license at fifteen in 1957. Joe was a charter member of the Eastern Iowa DX Association, formed in 1975. He enjoyed traveling with his wife, Vicki, and playing golf. Joe will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.

Joe is survived and lovingly remembered by his wife of 37 years, Vicki; daughter, Doctor Tara (Robert) Finkstein-Roos of Pella, IA; stepchildren, Brett (Andrea) Koranda of Cedar Rapids, and Jeffrey (Tina) Koranda of Parker, CO; ten grandchildren, Alex, Taylor, Sam, Luke, Emily, Ellie, Anna, William, Moza, and Engie; seven great-grandchildren; brother, Robert (Kathy) Finkstein of Germantown, WI; sister-in-law, Colleen Pickett; brother-in-law, Steve (Marlene) LeMont of Fairfax, IA; many nieces and nephews; his ROMEO group; and many cherished friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents and in-laws, Maxine and Gordon Edwards.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be directed to the Eastern Iowa DX Association or the Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy.
