Jon Owen Novak
Cedar Rapids
Jon Owen Novak (Handsome Jonny) passed away on Monday, September 23, 2024, at the age of 73. A Celebration of Life will be held from 1 PM to 3 PM on Sunday, November 3, 2024, at the IBEW Local #405 Hall, 1211 Wiley Blvd SW, Cedar Rapids. A funeral is not planned, consistent with Jon’s wishes. In lieu of flowers, donate to a charity of your choice, in memory of Jon.
Jon was born in Cedar Rapids on January 13, 1951. He graduated from Jefferson High School in 1969. After graduation, he worked as a journeyman electrician, until his retirement. Jon married Susan McKiernan in 1972 and together they raised two wonderful sons.
Jon was a member of IBEW Local #405 for more than fifty years. He was also a member of the Iowa Pyrotechnics Association. Jon enjoyed “boomers” and blowing things up, as much as watching the aerial shell explosions.
Jon was a do-it-yourself enthusiast, tackling multiple home remodeling and outbuilding renovation projects. He embraced the notion that “slow and steady wins the race.” His projects always took longer than predicted; the amount of time he spent planning (figuring) was surprising.
Jon was a junker and collector, scavenging treasures from other people’s trash and attending flea markets and antique shows. He preferred outdoor activities, in any weather, to being indoors. Jon appreciated the companionship of animals throughout his life and was especially proud of the peacocks he raised.
Jon cherished his family and friends. He exhibited remarkable strength, resolve and humility while managing his MS diagnosis for more than twenty-five years.
Jon enjoyed traveling, especially his trips to Alaska, Czechoslovakia, and Amsterdam. He was an avid fan of blues and rock and roll music, enjoying the performances of many gifted musical artists throughout his life.
Jon is survived by his wife of 52 years, Susan Novak of Cedar Rapids; his two sons, Jebediah Novak (Amy) of Cedar Rapids and Ethan Novak of Coralville; his grandson, Aidan Novak of Cedar Rapids; his brother, Robert Novak of Cedar Rapids; his two sisters, Mary Whitehead (Tommy) of Center Point and Patti Wilson (Dave) of Cedar Rapids.
He was preceded in death by his grandson, Tristan Novak, his two brothers, Don and Ron Novak; his sister, Jane; and sister-in-law, Joan Novak.
Jon’s life was well-lived. His light did not go out, until he was in the presence of the Son. Goodbye for now.
