John Slager

Iowa City

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of John Slager of Iowa City. He died on January 2, 2025 peacefully at “Colonial Manor of Amana” at the age of 61.

Thirty-eight years ago, at the age of 23, John survived a life-changing trauma: a gunshot to the head. This injury, while devastating, became a testament to his incredible will to live. Against the expectations of many, John thrived and lived a good life. John was the kind of person who brightened a room with a warm smile and a heartfelt “How are you doing, sweetie,” and “You look gorgeous today.” Despite his head injury, John was a great cribbage player, easily counting points and figuring out moves that amazed his two sisters and dad who were brave enough to play him, and oh how he loved to put puzzles together.

In the past months, complications from the lingering effects of that injury contributed to his passing.

John is survived by his dad, Gary Slager, his brother, Tim Slager, and two sisters, Janie Peto and Susan Slager.

Though our hearts ache from his passing, we find comfort in knowing that John will be reunited with our beloved mother, where their bond will shine eternal.

A private burial was held on Monday, January 6. Please consider donating to your local Hospice. To share a thought, memory or condolence with John’s family please visit Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation
