John (Jack) F. Sloane
Apple Valley, Minnesota
John (Jack) F. Sloane, 81, formerly of Hiawatha, Iowa, passed away Friday, March 8, 2024, at his home in Apple Valley, Minnesota. Funeral services will be held Friday, March 15th, at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Cedar Rapids. Visitation will be from 1 to 2 p.m. with the service to begin at 2 p.m. at the funeral home.
Jack was born July 30, 1942, the son of Carleton Church (C.C.) and Dorothy Sloane of Clinton, Iowa. Growing up in Clinton, Jack soon discovered a love for being on the water and the Mississippi River. He was an avid skier and a member of the Clinton ski team, being a part of the ski pyramid team and known for flying a kite on skis behind the boat, famously hitting a bridge during a performance.
Jack graduated from Clinton High School in 1961. He attended UW, Platteville, WI, before being drafted into the U.S. Army and Army National Guard, where he served until being honorably discharged in 1970 and 1972 respectively.
He married Kathy Marquez and they resided in Davenport, Iowa, where they had a son, Todd Michael, before eventually going their separate ways. In 1972, he married Judy Marxen and they built a home in Hudson, Iowa, where they were blessed with daughter Tammy in 1976 and son Ted in 1977 before moving to Cedar Rapids in 1985. They divorced, but Jack stayed in the area to be close to his kids. He later met Mary Ann Meyer and they shared over thirty years together blending families and creating memories while residing in Hiawatha. His final few months were spent up north in Minnesota with his daughter and her family.
Throughout his life, Jack worked in the construction trades where he used his creative skills and persuasive personality and became known as a “jack of all trades” finding innovative solutions for various projects inside and outside of work. He enjoyed life to the fullest and loved being social and among friends and family. His favorite pastimes included sharing a cold beverage with friends on or by the water, dancing, listening to big band/jazz music and spending time with friends, family and loved ones.
In retirement, he could be found working at the local hardware store helping others with their weekend projects. He was always quick to help others and loved using his gifts to help friends and family wherever and whenever possible.
Jack was loved dearly and will be greatly missed by his children, Tammy (Kevin) Kloss of Apple Valley, Minnesota, and their children Cade, Chet and Colt; son Ted (Katie) Sloane of North Liberty and their son Jayce Todd; significant other, Mary Ann Meyer of Hiawatha and her two sons, Barry and Chris Meyer and their families; sister-in-law Sharon Sloane of Camanche; nephew Jeff (Bobbi) Sloane of Comanche and niece Julie (Mike) Clausen of Arizona along with their families.
Jack was preceded in death by his parents, his son Todd Sloane and brother, Fred Sloane.
