When you’re born, you’re given a couple of grandmothers. But only a select few get a Banka!

JoAnne Murphy, 74, of Sherman, IL, passed gracefully and peacefully Tuesday, June 14, 2022 at Springfield Memorial Hospital in Springfield, IL. She was born July 16, 1947 in Pensacola, FL, to Lee (Parrish) Cooney and Homer Atkinson.

Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by her brothers Ed, Ray, David, and Paul, and sisters Donna and Geri.

She will be deeply missed by her husband Kenneth Murphy, Sherman, IL, with whom she was married for 49 years, daughter Shannon (Jamie) Lewis, Anderson, IN, and grandson Connor/14, daughter Erin Murphy, Pingree Grove, IL, son Ryan “Merf” Murphy, Sherman, IL, (Ex-wife Kristen Flowers), granddaughters Haylee Hornbacker/17 and Addison Murphy/12, sisters Karen Cooney and Diane Grigsby, New Port Richey, FL, brother John Atkinson, Escambia County, FL, and many cousins, nieces, and nephews.

She was a graduate of Oak Park River Forest High School. For the past 32 years she was a valuable asset and loyal employee as the Office Manager/Agent for State Farm Insurance in Sherman.
Her hobbies included watching sports, especially the Chicago Cubs and the Chicago Bears. She loved to play bunco and bingo with her friends. She enjoyed going on family vacations, cruises, and traveling to different gambling destinations around the country with Ken, friends, and family. Her favorite trip was to Ireland with him. She was a league bowler for over 20 years. While at home she loved to read and crochet anything from coasters to queen sized afghans. Along with being an amazing mother to Shannon, Erin, and Ryan, her favorite pastime in the world was being the best Banka to her three grandchildren Haylee, Connor, and Addison.

Memorial Gathering: 2:00 – 5:30 pm, Monday, June 27, 2022 at Staab Funeral Home – Sherman.

Memorial Service: 5:30 pm, Monday, June 27, 2022 at Staab Funeral Home – Sherman with Judy Henderson officiating.

Following the service, everyone is invited for dinner at Poe’s On The Hill, 295 E. Andrew Rd., Springfield, IL, 62707.

There will be no graveside service being held at this time.
