Joanne Marie Tubbs, 83, of Suttons Bay, MI, passed away Friday, March 8, 2024 at Munson Medical Center.
Joanne was born August 29, 1940 in Iowa City, IA the daughter of Hubert and Mildred (Spicer) Stephens.
She married her husband Dan Tubbs in 1976. They were married for 43 years before he passed away in 2019.
Joanne worked at Collin’s Aerospace in Cedar Rapids, IA for 25 years as a computer programmer and then as the Director of Application Development. She earned her MBA from the University of Iowa at the age of 54. She retired in 1998 and she and Dan moved to Suttons Bay, MI with their beloved cat Maggy.
They enjoyed an active retirement together, including golfing, hiking, cross-country skiing, antiquing and visiting museums. Joanne would sometimes row their canoe while Dan fly-fished. She especially loved bird watching and even attracted wild turkeys to her many bird feeders. They were both strong advocates for the environment and were dedicated to several conservancies in Michigan.
Joanne was a talented gourmet cook and an avid reader. When her daughter Vicki was younger, they often read together, with Stephen King novels as one of their favorites. They had a long tradition of shopping and a movie on the weekends, a tradition that was passed down to Vicki and her granddaughter Kristy. Joanne and Vicki texted almost every day and she exchanged “snail mail” and long emails with Kristy throughout the years.
She was generous and kind and had a witty sense of humor. No matter the distance she lived apart from family, she was always there for them when they needed her.
Joanne is survived by her daughter Victoria Beaumont; her step-children Tracy (Glenn Habib) Tubbs, Suzy (Bruce) O’Connell, and Marianne (Rory) Ward; her granddaughter Kristina “Kristy” (Dan) Cable; her great-granddaughter Aurelia Cable; her stepgrandchildren Collin Habib, Samatha Habib, Natalie (Sean) Sanders, Sean O’Connell, Rory Ward and Ellen (Dustin) Harrill; and her siblings Sylvia Stephens, James “Jim”, Richard “Dick”, Matte Lenore “Lenny”, and Hubert.
She was preceded in death by her parents, and her husband, Dan Tubbs.
Cremation has taken place and private family services will be held at a later date.
