Janet Marion Plumer
Middleton, Wis.
Janet Marion McKig Plumer, 96, of Middleton, Wis., formerly of Iowa City, died peacefully in the early morning hours of May 10, 2023. She was born on March 31, 1927, in Davenport, Iowa, the daughter of Robbie and Bernice (Ritter) McKig. She graduated from Davenport High School and Iowa State University. Janet married Dean O. Plumer on June 26, 1949; they had four daughters together. The family moved to Iowa City in 1952 where Janet lived for the next 70 years. Janet worked at home for many years as a full-time parent and then for many years for the Iowa City School District until her retirement in 1988. Dean preceded her in death in 1996.
Family was very important to Janet and she took immense pride in her daughters, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She was passionate and accomplished in many forms of needlework. She created beautiful garments, dolls, objects of art, works of embroidery, and loved giving her handiwork as gifts to family and friends. Other special interests included gardening, travel and her card groups. She was a gracious hostess. She was recognized for extensive volunteering over many years at the University of Iowa Hospital. Janet was a member of several organizations, all of which she enjoyed greatly. Her membership in PEO, Alpha Gamma Delta, Embroiderers Guild, United Methodist Women and the Taco Tuesday Ladies all meant a great deal to her. She and Dean were proud to be charter members of St. Mark’s United Methodist Church.
In addition to her parents and husband, Janet was preceded in death by her brother, Robert. She is survived by her daughters Sharon Moore, Waterloo, Wis., Christine Plumer (Jeff Line), Boise, Idaho, Jill Plumer (David Clark), Red Bank, Tenn., and Catherine Tobis (Sam), Verona, Wis. She is further survived by her grandchildren Nathan Moore (Jocelyn Blake), Jordan Moore (Janine Vanatta), Jennifer Dreckman, Abigail Line, Andrew Johnson (Charli), Marta Johnson and Alison Tobis; seven great-grandchildren; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. She will be greatly missed by all.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, June 24, 2023, at 2 p.m. at St. Mark’s United Methodist Church, 2675 E. Washington St., Iowa City. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to UI Stead Family Children’s Hospital (uihc.org/donations); Bird House, Coralville, Iowa, Hospice and End-of-Life Care (thebirdhousejc.org); or PEO, an organization providing educational opportunities for female students worldwide (donations.peointernational.org).
