He was preceded in death by his parents and wife of nearly 56 years Sandra.

Jan Leroy Byers was born August 13, 1948, at Anamosa, Iowa, the son of Jack and Edna Allen, Byers. Jan graduated from the Anamosa Community Schools with the class 1966. He worked at Collins Radio in Cedar Rapids and later at 7 States Oil and Apco in Monticello. The majority of his working career was at Energy Manufacturing where he was a machinist. Jan retired in 2013.

Jan married the love of his life Sandra Schafer on August 30, 1968 at Wayne Zion Lutheran Church. He met Sandy at a teen hop and that spark continued throughout their marriage with every Friday night being date night.

In retirement, Jan tilled gardens all over the area. When he tilled gardens in the Amish Community he was known as the candy man, always bringing suckers for everyone. That continued on to his grandchildren spoiling them to death. Jan had been on the Monticello Fire Department, a member of the Monticello Eagles Club and the Monticello Golf Club. He loved his many fishing trips with his friends to Canada, Minnesota and South Dakota.
