James Clyde Coleman, 77, of Monticello, Iowa, passed away at the UnityPoint Health-St. Luke’s Hospital in Cedar Rapids on Wednesday, Aug. 24, 2022, surrounded by his loving family.
A memorial service will be held at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 27, at the Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories, with the Certified Celebrant Randy Walton officiating. Inurnment to follow at
the Anderson Cemetery in Swisher, Iowa.
James was born on June 23, 1945, in Atlus, Okla. He was the son of the late Jesse and Doris (McAvoy) Coleman. He was the oldest of six children. They moved to Bismarck, N.D., and Jim lived there until 1963 when he graduated from high school. Jim enlisted in the U.S. Army in December 1963, where he served overseas in Korea and Vietnam until 1966. He married Donna Levsen in 1967. He worked in Cedar Rapids for Wilson’s/Farmstead Food for 24 years. He was the president of the UFCW Union Local P3 for six years from 1984-90. When Farmstead Foods closed, he worked for ABC Supply for three years. Jim owned a taxi service from 1993 until his retirement in 2012. Jim enjoyed fishing, hunting, water skiing and spending time with his family.
Those left to cherish Jim’s memory are his two sons, Chris James Coleman of Lisbon, Iowa, and James (Allison) Michael Coleman of Cedar Rapids; his grandchildren, Evan, Quinn, Mitchell, Rileigh and Garrett; his siblings, Diane (Clayton) Boeckel of Beulah, N.D., Susan (Joe) Vandewalle, of Palo, Iowa, Douglas (Robin) Coleman, of Bismarck, N.D., Beverly (Kenny) Mehrer of Bismarck, N.D., and Deborah (Wesley) Woehl of Bismarck, N.D.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Swisher American Legion Post 671 or to UnityPoint Hospice.
