Jack N. Ryen

Jack N. Ryen, age 84, of Waterman, IL, passed away at his home surrounded by his loving family on Saturday, December 12, 2020. He was born on September 28, 1936 in Chicago, IL, the son of Ole and Dorothy (Brubeck) Ryen.

Jack was a loving father, surrogate father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend to many. He was united in marriage on August 29, 1959 to Marilyn Well and they cherished 61 years of marriage together. He was a veteran of the United States Army and National Guard. His thirty year career in the telephone industry included positions from linesman to engineer.

Jack was an avid participant in a variety of sports throughout his life, finding equal pleasure in competition and camaraderie. In his early years, he played high school and collegiate football at UIC and U of I. He had the joy of experiencing both a hole-in-one in golf and bowling a perfect game. In his later years, he enjoyed softball, fishing, golf and playing Euchre.

Jack was a lover of music, especially that of the four tenors, and a lover of people. He could strike up a conversation with nearly anyone and was known for his generous hugs. He served as an elder of the Waterman Presbyterian Church, was a long-term member of the Lions Club and served on the Waterman School Board. Although he was active in various community activities, his highest priority was always his family.

He is survived by his wife, Marilyn Ryen of Waterman, IL, his daughters; Marla Barresi of Sycamore, IL, Maureen (Steve) Bremner of Waterman, IL, Michele (Ben) Anderson of Waterman, IL, and Melissa Bouma of Waterman, IL; his nine grandchildren, his four great-grandchildren, as well as a niece and nephews.

Jack is preceded in death by his parents, Ole and Dorothy Ryen, his sister, Carol Werkmeister, and his sons-in-law, Brett Bouma and Victor Barresi.

A Private Graveside Service will be held in the North Clinton Cemetery, Waterman, IL. Any memorials received will be forwarded to one of his favorite charities, St Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
