Isabelle Smith, 93, died peacefully Thursday, July 18, 2024, at Legacy Pointe.

Visitation will be from 9 AM to 11 AM, Tuesday, July 30, 2024 at Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service, Iowa City. A memorial service will be held at 11 AM with Rev. Al Coffin officiating. A luncheon will follow at The Kirkwood Room. A private committal will be at the Mentzer Cemetery , Hills.

Isabelle was supportive of a wide range of charities. In lieu of flowers, donors may direct memorials in Isabelle’s name to the charity of their choice.

Isabelle was born September 9, 1930, on the family farm in Stutsman County, North Dakota. She was the daughter of Henry “Harrison” and Christine (Jessen) Simmers. Isabelle attended a one-room country school and graduated from Jamestown High School.

In 1949, Isabelle moved to Iowa City. While attending the Mercy Hospital School of Nursing she met her future husband on a blind date. On August 31, 1952 Isabelle married Kenneth “Mink” Smith.

Isabelle and Mink and John and Sandy Moreland were longtime business partners. They owned and operated Superior Concrete, Smith-Moreland Properties, and Deli-Mart.

Isabelle was an avid bridge and euchre player as well as an accomplished bowler. She was a loyal Cubs and Hawkeye fan- women’s and men’s basketball, wrestling and football especially. She enjoyed meeting athletes through her work at the Lending Library for Scholarship Athletes. Isabelle volunteered many years at Mercy Hospital and gave her time to support a variety of causes. She brought people together for holidays, birthdays, family reunions, card games and to watch sports.

The family extends their appreciation to Iowa City Hospice and the caring staff at Legacy Pointe.

Isabelle is survived by her son, Mark Smith (Sara) of Iowa City; her daughter, Mallory Smith (Mike Mullinnix) of Elwood, IA; her twin sister, Annebelle Greitl of Topeka, KS; grandchildren, Sadie Cauldron (Rocio) of Iowa City, Chester Smith (Nicole) of Des Moines, Erik Smith of Iowa City, Tony Shepard (Rebekah) of Montrose, CO, Diego Zacarias of Ft. Collins, CO; step-grandchildren, Tonya Mullinnix of DeWitt and Tim Mullinnix of Tokyo; great grandchildren, Ender, Sol, Evelyn, Piper and Avery; and many cousins, nieces and nephews.

Isabelle was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Mink, and brothers, Francis and Lawrence.
