Herb began his journey at Cottage Hospital in Galesburg, Illinois, on July 5, 1942. During his formative years, his family lived in Monmouth, Kirkwood, and finally, in Roseville, Illinois, where he graduated from high school in 1960. Herb then enlisted in the Air Force, serving four years before beginning his college life. He graduated from Western Kentucky University with a degree in Economics; Duke Divinity School, Duke University, with a Master of Divinity; and Eden Theological Seminary, St. Louis, Missouri, with a Doctor of Ministry degree. Herb re-entered the Air Force in 1974, serving a total of 24 years on active duty. He was stationed in the Middle East, Europe, the Far East, and several locations in the United States. While in the Air Force, he graduated from Air Command and Staff College and was a resident student and graduate of the Air War College, Montgomery, Alabama, a one-year school for senior Air Force Officers. He retired from the Air Force in October 1993 and, in January 1995, moved to Cedar Rapids, Iowa, where he served as a Presbyterian pastor for fifteen years, retiring in 2010.
Herb is survived by his wife, Judy, and five children: Timothy (Renee) of Marion, Iowa; David (Megan) of Marion, Iowa; Kevin (Mary) of Summerville, South Carolina; Julie (Pat) Sikora of Bowling Green, Kentucky; and Kristy (Mike) Wagner of Phoenix, Arizona; fifteen grandchildren, one great-grandson, and a brother, Gregory (Lenora), of Bowling Green, Kentucky.
In retirement, Herb enjoyed reading and writing, and until a stroke in 2020, walking several miles each day for exercise. Herb died on August 28, 2024 peacefully at home due to a heart attack.
A memorial service will be conducted at First Presbyterian Church in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, on Friday, September 6 at 11:00 AM with visitation beginning two hours prior to the service.
