Helen J. Johnson, 100, formerly of rural Oxford, died Monday, April 10, 2023, at the Colonial Manor Care Center in Amana.
Graveside services will be held at 3 p.m. Monday, April 17, at the Oxford Cemetery. A time of visitation will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. Monday at the Oxford United Methodist Church. Helen Jane Sherlock was born Jan. 2, 1923, in Iowa County, Iowa, the daughter of Robert and Libbie (Nesmith) Sherlock. She was united in marriage to Donald E. Johnson, Feb. 20, 1947, in Iowa City. The couple farmed near Oxford for many years and for about 10 years, Helen worked for the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. She was a longtime active member of the Oxford United Methodist Church, was still keeping her home in good order up to the age of 94, was known as the pie maker queen, a good friend to many and the worlds Best Grandma to the lucky grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Her family includes her son and his wife, David and Nora Johnson; five grandchildren, Jessica Johnson (Chris Green), Jennifer Christie (Dennis), Ben Johnson (Heather), Jeff Van Hemert (Laura) and Bindy Sornsin (Sean); 10 great-grandchildren, Libby and Owen Green, Olivia and Evelyn Christie, Cecil, Jonathan and Lucie McClung, Brynlee, Zachary and Pierce Van Hemert, and Sophia Sornsin; and son-in-law, Brian Comito.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Donald; daughter, Joan and her husband, James Van Hemert; and four brothers, Tom, Jim, Bud and Bill Sherlock.
