Harold “Bud” Charles Schulte, Jr., age 73 of Amana, passed away after a sudden illness, on Tuesday, September 10, 2024, at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, surrounded by his family. A visitation will be held from 9:00 a.m. until 10:45 a.m. at St. Michael’s Catholic Church Parish Center, Norway on Tuesday, September 17, 2024. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 A.M. Tuesday, at St. Michael’s Catholic Church, with Fr. Jacob Dunn officiating. Inurnment will follow at St. Michael’s Cemetery, Norway. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be contributed to St. Michael’s Catholic Church, Norway, Safe Haven of Iowa County, or the Amana Arts Guild. Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo, is assisting the family with arrangements.
Bud was born the ninth of thirteen children to Harold and Marie (Bigge) Schulte on April 26, 1951, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. He graduated from Norway High School in 1969. Following graduation, Bud attended college at the University of Iowa in Iowa City, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Art Education. Following college, he worked full-time as a manager for the Ox Yoke Inn. Bud married the love of his life, Renate, on October 22, 1976, at Holy Trinity Church in Walford. Bud and Renate would have celebrated 48 years of marriage this year.
Bud loved antiques and antique sales. In 1984 he was given the opportunity to open his own antique shop, Renate’s Antique Gallery in Amana. Together he and Renate enjoyed their shop and selling their antiques across the United States. Bud saw true beauty and purpose in every antique he touched and displayed in his shop. His enthusiasm, soft smile and artistic hands will always be remembered. Together Bud and Renate loved traveling to Europe and other countries. They loved fine dining, and entertaining family and friends in their home. Bud volunteered for his church and local activities, serving as a board member of the Amana Heritage Society, member of the Amana Arts Guild, Catholic Foresters and Parish Council. He also delivered Meals on Wheels.
He is survived by his wife, Renate; his brothers, Arnold and Nick Schulte of Amana; his sisters, Cecelia Becker of Marshalltown, Ann (Walt) Oakley of Libertyville, Illinois, Christine (Larry McDowell) of Cedar Rapids, Jolene (Frank) Randall of Ames, Brenda (Tim) Kapucian of Keystone, and Valerie (Sue Ann) Schulte of Phoenix, Arizona. Also surviving are his in-laws, Jutta (Morrie) Denson of Marengo, Margaret (Lynn) Trumpold of Middle Amana, Peter (Kim) Otte of Cedar Falls, and Robert (Denise) Otte of Marengo, along with numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his brothers Alan and Vincent Schulte, and his sisters Susan Schulte and Janice Tranberry.
With kindness, Bud’s free time was spent helping many family siblings through the years. He will always be remembered as a wonderful man, loving husband, brother, uncle and friend. He was an extraordinary man who managed his life for the good of all. He will be greatly missed by his family and all those who felt his love.
