Grace Erickson
Grace Erickson, 99, of Shabbona, Illinois, formerly of Waterman, passed away peacefully on Sunday, September 11, 2022, at the Franklin Grove Living and Rehabilitation Center following a brief stay. She was born June 7, 1923, in LaGrange, Illinois, the daughter of Arthur and Cora (Zick) Graunke. Grace graduated from Downers Grove High School in 1940 and married Harold Erickson on May 1, 1943. They farmed in the Lemont area for many years and later in Waterman.
In addition to being a farm wife, Grace owned and operated a Clover Farm country store near Lemont. After moving to Waterman in 1969, she worked off the farm part-time at Larsen’s Hardware in Waterman, Hardware Hank in Shabbona, and making donuts at Honey Hill Orchard until finally “retiring” at age 90. Grace loved being outdoors, gardening, and also enjoyed bowling, polka dancing, playing cards, bingo, and listening to bluegrass and country music. She was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, Hinckley, and the DeKalb County Farm Bureau.
Grace is survived by her sons, Richard Erickson of Waterman and Donald (Mary Ann) Erickson of Shabbona; grandchildren David (Janel) Erickson, Waterman, and Keith Erickson, Shabbona; step-grandchildren Stanley (Susan) Peterson, Fishers, Indiana, and Elizabeth (Richard) Cruise of Shabbona. She is also survived by great-granddaughters Paige Erickson and Emery Erickson, and step-great grandchildren Sydney Peterson, Sarah Peterson, Ricky (Holly) Cruise and Scott Cruise.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Harold, her daughter-in-law Mollie Erickson, sister Elaine Homerding, and half-brother Raymond Graunke.
The family would like to give special thanks to the staff of Prairie Crossing Supportive Living Facility, Shabbona, where Grace enjoyed living the past nine years. Funeral services will be held on Friday, September 16, at 10:00 a.m. at Nash-Nelson Funeral Chapel, 1001 E. Garfield St., Rt. 23, Waterman. Friends may visit from 5-8 p.m. on Thursday, September 15, at Nash-Nelson Funeral Chapel, Waterman. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to Immanuel Lutheran Church, Hinckley.
