Gladys Payne, 88, died Wednesday evening Dec. 6, 2023 at St. Lukes Hospital, Cedar Rapids with her family by her side.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held Tuesday morning, Dec. 12, 2023, at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Monticello with burial in the Sacred Heart Cemetery, at a later date. Friends may call from 9:30 until 10:45 at the church. Father Paul Baldwin will officiate at the services.

Surviving is her husband of 65 years Clifford, 2 sons, Brad (Peggy), Bryan (Leann), 2 grandsons, Eric (Staci), Bruce (Carly) Payne, 2 step-granddaughters, Ayla and Nyssa Nieto, 7 great-grandchildren and 2 sisters, Lucille Swanson and Irene (Richard) Nickels and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and siblings, Anna Mae Tiemann, Leonard Miller, and Janet McAleer.

Gladys Elizabeth Miller was born Dec. 3, 1935, at Ossian, Iowa. She was the daughter of Fred and Rose Balk, Miller. Gladys graduated from the Martelle Community Schools. She then started working at Collins Radio in Cedar Rapids. Gladys married Charles Clifford Payne on Nov. 22, 1958, at St. Patrick Catholic Church, Anamosa. The couple both worked at Collins Radio until Cliff bought into First Electric in Monticello. In 1975 they moved to a new location in Monticello and opened as Cliffs Radio and TV. Gladys was Cliffs partner and bookkeeper for the company.

When Gladys was home, she enjoyed doing jigsaw puzzles and talking with her sisters on the phone. She was an excellent cook, especially her mashed potatoes and scratch made cakes. She loved the time she spent with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren always asking about their pets and activities. She will be greatly missed.
