Gerald “Jerry” Thomas Sheriff, 80, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, died unexpectedly on
Thursday
, May 18, 2023, surrounded by his family. Jerry was the beloved husband of Lois Jean Sheriff. They shared 40 years of marriage together. Jerry was born in Lansing, Iowa, on Dec. 11, 1942, the son of Jasper David Sheriff and Clara Veronica Sheriff (nee Logas).
Jerry was predeceased by his parents and his half siblings, James Rossi, Dorothy Rossi, Robert Rossi and Paul Rossi.
Jerry is survived by his wife, Lois; his stepdaughters, Jean Finley and Patty Cramblet; his son-in-law, Jerry Cramblet; his three grandchildren, Brian, Connor and Bailey; and his two great-grandchildren.
Jerry served in the U.S. Army from 1961 to 1970 as a cook and baker. He attended Cook and Bakers School in 1961 and received an honorable discharge from the Army in 1970. Jerry met his wife Lois while working as a gas station manager in Cedar Rapids. Jerry then served as first cook for Bishop’s Buffet in Westdale Mall from 1989 until Bishop’s closed in 1997. From 1997 until his retirement in 2014, Jerry worked as a cook in the Johnson County Jail. In his well-deserved retirement, Jerry enjoyed tending to his lawn and garden, spending time with his family, and caring for his cherished wife. Jerry will be remembered as a patient, kind, very funny man and a devoted father and husband.
A Celebration of Life will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday July 1, at the Indian Creek Nature Center in Cedar Rapids. Condolences can be mailed to Lois Sheriff, P.O. Box 10707, Cedar Rapids, IA 52402.
