Gary S. Hackbarth, 76, of Robins, Iowa, passed away on October 18, 2024, at St. Luke’s Hospital. A private family burial with military honors will take place at Linwood Cemetery in Cedar Rapids. Gary’s family will host a Celebration of Life November 9 from 12 – 4 p.m. at the Community Savings Bank Community Room, 101 Robins Square, Robins, Iowa 52328.

Gary was born on October 12, 1948, in Dubuque, Iowa, the son of Harold and Geraldine (Primus) Hackbarth. He graduated with the Class of 1966 from Wahlert High School. From there he graduated from United Electronics Institute in 1969. He earned his Associate of Arts degree from Kirkwood in 1975. Gary was drafted into the United States Army, where he served from 1969 to 1971 in West Germany as an MP. There he met the love of his life, Ursula Graf. The couple were united in marriage on October 22, 1971, and made their home in Robins, Iowa. He retired from Rockwell Collins in 2011 after 38 years. Gary enjoyed spending time with family and grandchildren and attending their sporting events. He was an avid fisherman and hunter. His hobbies included woodworking, and later in life, he enjoyed planting his fruit trees. Gary was a godly man who was very gentle and kind in spirit and truly cherished his family and friends.

Gary is survived by his children, daughter, Sheila (Tony) Roe of Swisher, Iowa; sons, Eric (Chandra Dowda) Hackbarth of Davenport Iowa, and Glen (Amanda) Hackbarth of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; 5 grandchildren, Hannah and Anika Roe, Jaslyn (Jaydon) Davis, and Ella and Bryson Hackbarth; one great-grandchild, Ryder Davis; father, Harold Hackbarth of Dubuque, Iowa; siblings, Denny (JoAnn) Hackbarth of Dubuque, Kevin (Ellen) Hackbarth of Rock Island, Illinois, Jim (Julie) Hackbarth of Eldridge, Iowa, Judy Cosby of Phoenix, Arizona, Linda (Keith) Benson of Batavia, Illinois, Diane (Dumont Moore) Hackbarth of Rockford, Illinois, Carol (Pat) Farrell of Choctaw, Oklahoma; sister-in-law, Cheryl Hackbarth of Maple Park, Illinois; brothers-in-law, Karlheinz (Eva) Graf and Martin (Lavinia) Graf, and many nieces and nephews.

Gary was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Ursula; mother, Geraldine Hackbarth; brother, Ron Hackbarth; brother, David who died in infancy and nephew, Brian Cosby; maternal grandparents, Elmer and Bernadine Primus; paternal grandparents, Arthur and Gertrude Hackbarth; father-in-law, Karl; and mother-in-law, Lieselotte Graf.

Memorials may be directed to the family for a fund that has been established.
