Marion

Gary Michael Smart was born on April 30th, 1954, in Cedar Falls, Iowa, and passed away on November 14th, 2023 in Marion. He was the beloved son of Norman “Norm” Smart and Virginia Smart (Hinson).

Gary’s life’s work included his time at Rockwell Goss as a foreman in press assembly, driver and mechanic with Hill & Williams Brothers, and retired from Rathje Construction as a heavy equipment mechanic. Gary was truly a “Jack of All Trades,” yet

master of most, while still managing to be “always right”…

Gary’s hobbies included hiking, camping, building and racing mini-sprint cars with his son and brother, woodworking, and fishing. After retiring, Gary devoted much of his time volunteering with Bassmasters Eastern Iowa Youth, and Cedar Rapids fishing clubs. Gary’s family would like to extend their gratitude to the medical care teams at Marion, Cedar Rapids, and University of Iowa- with a special thank you to Sara Hubbell and Julie Torres. There will not be a formal service at this time per Gary’s request. However, a celebration of life memorial will be announced in the near future.

Gary is survived by loving family and friends. His loyal son, Nathan Smart, to whom he passed down his mechanical and technical skills, along with enjoyment for race cars and fishing. His beautiful daughter, Nicole (Fred) Radunzel, who made him a proud grandfather of Layla and Hudson Radunzel; brother, Joel Smart, former wife, and kind friend, Donna Dirks (Seeley). Gary’s best friend and adored life partner, Maretta Portzline, who shared his love for camping and hiking in Colorado. He is also survived by his chocolate lab “Muggs”, preceded in death by “Otis” and “Whiskey” – his boating and fishing co-pilots. Gary touched the lives of many people through his volunteer efforts with Bassmasters, and he will continue to live on through those legacies

A memorial for Gary is scheduled for Dec. 10, 2023, from noon to 2 p.m. at the Red Cedar Lodge, 1700 Big Blue Stem Dr., Wanatee Park, Marion, Iowa.
