Emmett Bond Sr.

Emmett Bond Sr., 95 1/2, of Shelby, passed away on Tuesday, February 8, 2022 at Lifecare Hospice of Wooster. He was born on September 15, 1926 to the late Lucius and Lucy (Shaw) Bond in Brownsville, Tennessee.
No man ever loved his family more than Emmett. He never met a stranger and if you met him, you wouldn’t forget him. He grew up farming and continued to do so his whole life. He was the first African American to own a licensed slaughter house in the state of Ohio, B & B Packing located in Shelby, Ohio. He and his brother, Leon and his son, Emmett Jr. were race horse enthusiasts and enjoyed many years in the Standardbred Race Horse Industry. He was extremely dedicated to his faith and was a member of the Shelby Congregation of Jehovah’s Witnesses.
He is survived by his children, Shirley Cole, Jeremy (Jessica) Shepherd, Jodie (Melvin) Stickney, and Billy D. Swisher, a foster son; his grandchildren, Tracey (Greg) Bond, Kirsten (Gary) Buchanan, Amy Scott-Bond, Gregory Luckie, Jordan Shepherd, Trinity Stickney, Aaron Mitchell, Lillianna Murphy, and Jeremy Shepherd Jr.; 9 great-grandchildren; 2 great-great-grandchildren; his brothers, James Bond, Thomas Bond, and Glenn (Patty) Bond; his sister, Lillian (Alfred) Smith; his sister-in-law, Delores Bond and Georgiana Bond; a fellowship brother, Larry Keinath; numerous nieces and nephews; and many cousins. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Stella (Waddell) Bond; his children, Emmett Bond Jr. and Patti Luckie; his brothers, Leon Bond, Calvin Bond, and Curtis Bond; his sister, Elizabeth Moorman; and his sisters-in-law, Hazel Bond and Ann Bond.
The family will receive friends on Monday, February 14, 2022 from 11:00 am-1:00 pm at the Diamond Street Home of Wappner Funeral Directors, 98 S. Diamond Street. Funeral services will follow immediately at 1:00 pm. Emmett will be laid to rest in Mt. Hope Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Richland County Fair Board.
