Elaine (Hopp) Langenberg, of Iowa City, passed away Thursday, Aug. 11, 2022, following a short illness. Services for Elaine will be held 11 a.m. Friday, Aug. 19, at Memory Gardens Cemetery in Iowa City for family and friends to attend.

Elaine was born to Everett and Hester (Wyjack) Hopp on March 11, 1924, growing up in the farming community of Morse, Iowa. After graduation from Iowa City High School and the Iowa City Business college, she was employed at the University of Iowa College of Education as an administrative assistant until her retirement in 1989. She loved her job and enjoyed helping people, and after retirement went on to do various volunteering projects.

Elaine was united in marriage to Joseph John Langenberg at St. Mary’s Catholic Church on June 27, 1946. They had an active life together sharing a love of music, playing cards, camping, pro baseball games, dining out, concerts, visiting children in Kansas City and Minneapolis, and enjoying their grandchildren.

After Joe’s death in 1988, Elaine continued to live a full and happy life, spending much of her time with her children and grandchildren, and the many lifelong friends she made along the way. Some of her travels include, Hawaii, Rome, Florida, Chicago and Branson, Mo., just to name a few. She was a loyal Iowa Hawkeyes fan, loved to play cards with her friends, sew for gift giving, cook and bake wonderful pies … she never missed a day working a crossword puzzle. Suffice it to say, she lived a wonderful and long life, and for that, her family will be forever grateful.

Blessed with meeting Elaine in eternal life are her husband, Joe; daughter, Nancy (Wagner); her parents; brothers, Wayne, Keith and Eldon; grandson, Nicholas Daniel; great-granddaughter, Maggie Amelia Rose; numerous in-laws and relatives, along with so many close friends. There is no doubt Elaine is rejoicing with delight bringing her usual love and laughter.

Elaine will be missed by so many and is survived by her children, John Langenberg (Dana Fountaine), Overland Park, Kan., Jeanne Berg (Daniel), Iowa City, and Diane Langenberg, Plymouth, Minn.; and sisters-in-law, Phyllis Hopp and Joan Hopp. She also had a very special place in her heart for her godson, Patrick Langenberg.

Her grandchildren will miss her warm and loving smile, and include Kelli (Duane) Brenneman, Kari (Bernie) Daly, Sean Langenberg, Thad Langenberg and Merrie Kate Langenberg (Kyle Wilkeson). Great-grandchildren include Piper Rogerson, Jack Rogerson, Jaime Brenneman, Jude Brenneman, Isaac Crawford and Liam Daly, and she was delighted to see the ultrasound of soon-to-be baby Daly!

Our family would very much like to thank the Iowa City Rehab Center for their care of Elaine during these past few years, keeping her safe and comfortable.

In lieu of flowers, the family would request consideration of monetary donations to the Disabled American Veterans, which was an important charity to her.
