Edward “Ed” Norbert Crock, age 93 of Iowa City, formerly of Tipton, passed away on Sunday, December 22, 2024 at Briarwood Health Care Center in Iowa City. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday, December 30, 2024 at 11:00 AM at St. Thomas More Catholic Church in Coralville with Fr. Chuck Adams officiating. Visitation will be from 9:30 AM until service time at the church. Burial will be in the Lowden Cemetery with military rites.

Ed was born May 21, 1931 to Norbert and Edith (Cosgriff) Crock in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. He married Louise Deichmann on June 11, 1953 in Mechanicsville, Iowa.

Survivors include his wife Louise; son Blain (Shari) of Clarence; daughter Crystal (Seiji) Kitagawa of Houston, Texas; grandchildren Barrett (Sandy) Crock, Brandon Crock, Stacey (Brett) Mormon, Nicole Kitagawa, Ryan (Melody) Kitagawa, Bryant (Keeli) Crock, Brittany (Zach) Crock, and Stephanie (Chris) Hall; and 7 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters Genevieve and Adeline; and son Brad.

From Louise: Ed was wonderful in every way; son, husband, father, brother, father-in-law, grandpa and friend. As his wife, I am so grateful that God brought us together for over 71 years.

I first saw Ed in Tipton, Iowa when Ed was Vice President of 4H in Cedar County. I was totally impressed. I was the secretary of our small 4H club in Lowden. The county 4H entertained club officers with a barn dance and he spotted me sitting on a bale of hay and said I was smiling at him. From there on we dated and married while Ed was in the service. Ed served his country as an instructor during the Korean War. After two years of service, we returned home to farm and raise our three children. Ed was very active in politics and served as a Cedar County Supervisor and during his time in office, the new courthouse in Tipton was built along with the bridge at Cedar Valley.

Ed had many hobbies and interests. He learned to fly and soon received his pilot’s license. We enjoyed taking airplane trips to Hawkeye football games, EAA airshows in Wisconsin and various places throughout the US. Ed passed his love of flying to his son Brad who later became a commercial pilot. Boating, water skiing and camping also became part of our family’s summer activities.

He was always supportive of my interests; building a beauty salon, driving the school bus to high school basketball games and attending granny basketball games in which I also coached. Ed worked long hours at building a successful farming operation enabling myself and our three children the opportunity to attend college. He passed his love of farming to his son Blain and grandson Brandon and loved helping them out whenever he could. As we aged, we spent winters in Texas and enjoyed meeting other snowbirds from around the country. Following retirement, we moved to Coralville to enjoy watching the Hawks and taking time to visit our kids, grandkids and great-grandchildren.

This last year was spent at Briarwood Nursing Home where he received excellent care and made wonderful friends.
