Dr. John Louis Duffy Jr., 89, died at home Oct. 14, 2022, in Walker, Iowa. Services will be at Friday, October 28, at 11 a.m. with visitation at 10 a.m. at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Walker, Iowa. A private inurnment will take place in the Sacred Heart Cemetery in Walker, following the service. A small reception will be held at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Walker.

He was born Jan. 20, 1933, in Boone, Iowa. John was a loving and brilliant husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, doctor and scholar. He shared his wisdom, generosity and kindness with those around him. He inspired all he encountered and educated those that would listen.

John attended Boone High School in Boone; the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul, Minn. (B.A.); Iowa State University in Ames; Indian Extension in South Bend, Ind.; Drake University in Des Moines; University of Iowa in Iowa City; University of Wisconsin Madison in Madison, Wis. (MD); Mercy Hospital in Des Moines (internship); and Mental Health Institute in Independence (psychiatric residency).

John taught Latin at Notre Dame. He worked at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Minneapolis, Minn.; the Hastings State Hospital in Hastings, Minn.; the Wyoming State Hospital in Laramie, Wyo.; the Forest City Hospital in Forest City, Iowa; the Iowa Department of Corrections/Anamosa State Penitentiary in Anamosa, Iowa; and as a clinical psychiatrist in Mount Pleasant, Iowa.

John developed and grew a thriving private practice in psychiatry and neurology in downtown St. Paul, Minn. There he diagnosed, assessed, and treated thousands of patients for a variety of psychological, behavioral, cognitive and physical disorders and complaints.

John met Sandra Kay (LaPole) Duffy in Iowa. On May 22, 1999, they were married at Sacred Heart Church in Walker.

John was preceded in death by his father, John L. Duffy Sr.; mother, Mary A. (Lux) Duffy; son, John W. (Jack) Duffy; daughter, Janet M. Duffy; and deceased spouse, Carola M. (Feirn) Duffy.

John is survived by his wife, Sandra Kay (LaPole) Duffy; children, Celia (William) Cameron, Brian L. Duffy; David F. Duffy, Kim Tennyson (Jon Rafel), Darin (Jan) Tennyson and Tina (Bob) Ginger; grandchildren, Anthony Duffy (Caitlin Johnson), Caleb Duffy, Isabel Cameron (Tanner Maki), Lesley Eiken (Travis Pederson), Mary (Brad) Trevaskis, Sam Eiken, Casey (Brittany) Long, Rebecca Tennyson, Garrett Tennyson, Drew Lane and Derek (Feliciti) Lane; and great-grandchildren, Alexandra, Jackson, Carlee, Aiden, John, Molly, Norah and Wade.
